Music News: Corinne Bailey Rae’s New Album Reflects Dealing With Husband’s Death

In the months after her husband died, Corinne Bailey Rae was fixated on the grieving process – specifically, whether there is a right and a wrong way to mourn.

It’s not as if Rae acted inappropriately after the death of Jason Rae from a drug overdose in 2008. The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, who dazzled the music world in 2006 with her sunny, silky self-titled debut, dropped out of sight after the tragedy. She spent a good part of her day simply resting, and when she felt like it, taking walks or spending time with loved ones.

She was also confused, in a haze, not knowing how to go forward after the destiny she thought she had was forever altered.

“I’m not familiar with that kind of shock that lasts all that amount of time,” the 30-year-old recalled. “It just sort of takes ages to sink it. You feel it and then you don’t feel it; you know what’s happened and then you don’t really know what happened. …

“Somebody wrote me a letter saying that you need to surrender to it, which I was like, ‘Well, how do I surrender?'”

While Rae still has not come to terms with her loss, she has determined that the grieving process is unique and different for everyone. And for her, it included channeling her emotions into her music. The result is her touching, tender new album, “The Sea,” started before the death of her husband but finished more than a year later.

“There are other people that have had these similar experiences … all different kinds of loss, and I feel like a lot of people don’t really sing about it in popular music,” said an upbeat, reflective Rae during a recent interview. “I want to be that one voice that is saying that this is also a human experience that is worth making music about.”

When Rae first started working on “The Sea,” she was determined to make an album that grew from the dreamy, groove-based tunes – such as “Put Your Records On” – that were becoming her signature. She was looking for sounds that were more aggressive, funky and complex.

“I wanted to make another record that was a partner to, and an answer to, the first album,” the British musician said of her debut CD, which sold more than 1 million copies in the United States alone. “I wanted to write something that was able to match that excitement that we’d feel in the audience.”

She had already started working on new music when her 31-year-old husband, described as a recovering addict, was found dead due to an overdose of methadone. In the aftermath, Rae found herself struggling to adapt to a role she never anticipated: widow.

“Part of that … experience is you can’t imagine a future,” said Rae. “Your imagined future is totally on fire.”

Rae, who lives in Leeds, England, didn’t work on new music, but found her mind occupied with other thoughts. She remembers becoming engrossed in etymology, the study of words, and found parallels in language to her own situation: “‘Grief,’ it’s from ‘grave,’ which means heavy. It’s a thing that lands on you, and there is nothing you can do to sort of make it work.”

It took months for her to cope through her music. When asked what she did, she simply said: “Nothing.”

“It’s hard to explain. “(I went) from being a really active person from having a really full diary to doing absolutely nothing because I had no interest in doing anything.”

She decided to start working on “The Sea” again because she missed creating and because she needed a goal: “I needed to have something to do. The main thing that this album has given me is something to do to take up my time.”

Corinne Bailey Rae“The Sea” is not mournful – there are driving grooves, sultry odes and sweet tunes. But it does contain several songs that reference her husband’s death. The album’s first song, the wistful “Are You Here,” speaks to the confusion of feeling the presence of someone no longer around: “Are you here, ’cause my heart recalls it all feels the same?”

Then there’s “I Would Like to Call It Beauty,” the song that most explicitly deals with death, and named for a phrase uttered by Jason Rae’s brother, Phillip (Rae even gave him song credit). The song’s first lines are, “So young for death, we walk in shoes to big, but you play it like a poet, like you always did.”

“It’s a way different record than the initial idea that she had in her head, but I think it was very necessary,” says Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, the Roots bandleader who worked on the rocking jam “The Blackest Lily,” recorded before Jason Rae’s death.

“If anything, this album sort of provides a kind of resolution to public mourning,” he said.

But for Rae, nothing is resolved: She is trying to figure out how to move on and she still wears her wedding ring.

“The shock of it is still really with me,” she said. “It’s hard to imagine that it’s not going to go back to how it was.”

Just In: Matt Kemp ‘Was Never Physically Abusive’ To Ex-Girlfriend

Rihanna & Matt Kemp Hang Out

The last thing Rihanna needs is to end up with another abusive man and reports of a restraining order against her new beau Matt Kemp by an ex-girlfriend, had people worried she was heading into the wrong direction.

According to Pop On The Pop we don’t need to worry about her new relationship, Matt’s agent Dave Stewart says he was never abusive to Felisha Terrell.

“Matt dated Felisha about two years ago and decided to end their relationship. She chose to file a complaint and shortly thereafter, on her own accord, decided to drop it based on the fact that the statements made within were false. She has very recently said that she has no issue whatsoever with Matt and that she and Matt consider this to be a non-issue.”

A representative for Felisha also cleared the air by saying during the relationship “there was a restraining order filed by Felisha but it had nothing to do with domestic violence and to be clear Matt was NEVER physically abusive to Felisha, nor did she fear for her life. The restraining order was subsequently vacated.”

“I’m a huge fan of Rihanna, but I’m not going to lie when I heard about her new man “Matt Kemp” possibly being abusive, I was a bit worried for her. She really doesn’t need another one of these episodes in her life. She’s young and deserves to be happy. She’s back and ready to blow us all away with her beautiful music. Keep up the good work and I wish her the best in everything she does.”

NOTES: Dirty Mind, Lonely Heart: John Mayer on Jennifer Aniston, Tiger Woods & Masturbating

A shirtless John Mayer is on the new cover of Rolling Stone, and inside he talks a lot about sex, finding a partner, and masturbation. Mayer himself has read it, as he tweeted, “Just read my Rolling Stone cover article. I’m still not sure if I would want to hang out with me” “After 30 minutes of twirling my hair into a knot, I say “fuck it.” You can’t go wrong if you tell the truth.”

Here are some highlights from his interview.

About Jennifer Aniston: The 32-year-old singer-guitarist admits he prefers Continuum to his 2009 disc Battle Studies (“I know that I’m supposed to say that my newest is the best one. Bullshit,” he says), that he hasn’t stopped thinking about his split with ex-girlfriend Jennifer Aniston (“I’ve never really gotten over it. It was one of the worst times of my life”) and that his sex life has become an endless loop of new girls rejecting him in clubs (“Blowing me off is the new sucking me off!”).

Mayer also talks about, among other things, masturbation and Tiger Woods: “I have masturbated myself out of serious problems in my life. The phone doesn’t pick up because I’m masturbating. And I have excused myself at the oddest times so as to not make mistakes. If Tiger Woods only knew when to jerk off. It has a true market value, like gold bullion. First of all, I don’t jerk off because I’m horny. I’m sort of half-chick. It’s like District 9. I can fire alien weapons. I can insert a tampon. No, I do it because I want to take a brain bath. It’s like a hot whirlpool for my brain, in a brain space that is 100 percent agreeable with itself.”

And what he’s looking for: Mayer’s in the midst of a massive 10-year record deal and enjoys the pleasures of late-night weed-and-video-game sessions, as well as his $20 million vintage watch collection, but what he truly wants, he tells RS, is to finally find a a female companion. But not just any girlfriend — Mayer is after “the Joshua Tree of vaginas.” “I’ll be happy when I close out this life-partner thing,” he says. “Think of how much mental capacity I’m using to meet the right person so I can stop giving a fuck about it.”

Grab the new issue for Mayer’s full advice for Tiger Woods (”I have masturbated myself out of serious problems in my life”) and more on his journey from bedroom guitar player to the most angst-ridden playboy in rock.

Celebrity News: Matt Kemp was abusive in previous relationship?

Rihanna May Be Dating Another Violent Abuser…

Rihanna has been dating LA Dodgers player Matt Kemp for around one month. The couple have been playing grab-ass on rented yatchs, and playing coy with the media. According to new reports, Kemp may have just as nasty a temper as Chris Brown.

From Yahoo News (via Celeb Slam): Rihanna, 21, is currently dating LA Dodgers star Matt Kemp, and an ex-girlfriend of his, actress Felisha Terrell, 30, has revealed his violent past and claims that she took a restraining order out against him in June 2008.

“He is violent and I am afraid. He repeatedly made me scared and gets in my face. He is threatening to take all the items I purchased and try to destroy my property,” the Mirror quoted her as saying. “He brings his friends driving up and down the street to try and intimidate me. I am very fearful. He has other people calling me and stalking me.”

Celebrity Couples: Rihanna and Matt Kemp

[Rihanna joins Matt Kemp for a game]

Less than a year ago, Rihanna‘s life was turned upside down after she was assaulted by former boyfriend Chris Brown. Now the singer seems to be putting the traumatic past behind her.

On Saturday, she was spotted at the LA Clippers vs Cleveland-Cavaliers game at the Staples Center in Los Angeles with her new pal, Dodgers star Matt Kemp, wearing her hair styled in angelic golden ringlets. The pop star, who will celebrate her 22nd birthday next month, appears to have kept her famous graduated bob hairstyle, adding playful curls for her day at the game.

In addition to the new style, photographers captured the singer with a perpetual and very sincere-looking grin on her face. Last week, Rihanna opened up to W magazine about coming out of the fog of last winter: “At first I completely shut down. But now I feel like this happened to me so I could be a voice for young girls who are going through what I went through and dont know how to talk about it.”

She also revealed a desire to focus on her budding acting career, briefly cut short by all the media attention surrounding her private life last year. As everyone who watched her fall appearance on “SNL” can attest, Rihanna has comedic acting skills that rival her talent as a singer.

Take a closer look at the new style below….

Celebrity News: Hollywood’s Top-Earning Couples

According to Forbes, the indisputable king and queen of the hip-hop prom are Jay-Z and Beyoncé Knowles. The couple, who quietly married in 2008, not only produce and sing some of the biggest hits on the charts (including “Single Ladies” and “Empire State of Mind“) but they oversee clothing lines, perform around the world, and endorse products from companies like American Express and Budweiser.

All that hard work has paid off. Between June 2008 and June 2009 the couple earned a combined $122 million putting them squarely at the top of our annual Top-Earning Couples list.

Our list includes actors, musicians, and professional athletes. We talked to agents, managers, producers, and lawyers to determine what celebrities earned from staring in movies, touring, selling albums, playing professional sports, creating lines of clothing and perfumes, and appearing in ads.

Jay-Z and Beyoncé both contribute significantly to their joint earnings. Last year Beyoncé out-earned Jay-Z, bringing in $87 million to his $35 million. (The couple also topped last year’s list with $162 million. About half of that came from each star.)

For the couple in second place on our list, it’s more about his big payday. Harrison Ford and his girlfriend, Calista Flockhart, earned a combined $69 million, $53 million less than Jay-Z and Beyonce.

Almost all of that came from Fords work in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” Ford and producers Steven Spielberg and George Lucas made a unique deal with Paramount on the movie that gave them a significant portion of the film’s earnings after the studio broke even. As a result Ford eared a jaw-dropping $65 million for putting back on Indy’s trademark fedora. Flockhart earns for her work on the TV show “Brothers & Sisters.”

In third place: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The power couple earned a total of $55 million split about evenly between them both. Pitt had one of the biggest hits of his career last year with “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” and Jolie has embraced her inner action hero with 2008’s “Wanted” and the upcoming film “Salt.”

Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, rank fourth with $48 million. Smith is perhaps the last of the great movie stars. Even in recessionary times he still can demand a $20 million paycheck. Pinkett Smith has a burgeoning career of her own. She voices Gloria the hippo in the popular “Madagascar” films and last year produced “The Secret Life of Bees.”

The Smiths would earn even more if we were including whole families. Their daughter, Willow, appeared in “I Am Legend” with her dad and did voice work with her mom on “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.” Jaden Smith co-starred with his father in “The Pursuit of Happyness” and will star in the upcoming remake of “The Karate Kid.”

Rounding out the top five are David and Victoria Beckham. The pair earned $46 million between June 2008 and June 2009. The vast majority of that comes from David Beckham, who plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy. He is also playing for A.C. Milan and could appear in his fourth World Cup this summer.

As her fourth album, Rated R, receives accolades and she gets ready to kick off her international tour, Rihanna is only getting hotter. Here, she sizzles in Gucci’s cotton dress with sexy cut-outs on the February 2010 cover of W Magazine, as captured by Craig McDean and styled by Lori Goldstein. Less than a year ago Rihanna was virtually in hiding. But now, with a hit record and a new sense of bravery, she’s ready to show the world who she really is.

Here are some highlights from her interview.

On the best part of her day: “When I’m with my glam team getting my hair and makeup done—we talk so much s—!”

On her fashion sense: “My stylist Mariel Haenn and I always try to do something sexy but never too girly—we always try to put a little toughness in there.”

On never once wishing herself back in Barbados, living a quiet life: “Oh no, I never fantasize about that. Because if I were back there, I know I’d be fantasizing about all this.”

Music News: Tila Tequila Records

Twitting TwitRumor has it that Tila Tequila is starting her own record label.

Tila Tequila wrote on her official blog, about her latest endeavor:

I am EXTREMELY excited to announce that now have my very own RECORD LABEL!!!!!!! It’s just called “TILA TEQUILA RECORDS” because that name is trademarked already so I might as well use it for the Record Label too!  For a long time I have been trying to get this up and going since the beginning of this year and now it’s FINALLY DONE!!!!!!!  IT is OFFICIAL!  Tila Tequila has her own record label “TILA TEQUILA RECORDS!”

Why should you choose this label over pretty much any other option? Tila lists a few reasons:

  • A new artist signed at a “Major Record Label” is about 90% likely to “end up miserable and broke” because the album will never be released and/or promoted.
  • Tila will “INSTANTLY, literally give you overnight fame.”
  • She won’t take any commission off your record sales.
  • YOU WILL BECOME A MAJOR SUPERSTAR FASTER THAN YOU CAN SAY “SUPERSTAR!”
  • Tequila is “a young, hot, sexy biatch who is relentless and passionate in what she does!”
  • Artists under Tila’s label will accompany her on tours around the world and receive free first class trips. She will set them up with personalized merchandise and YouTube channels that make money.

In the end, Tequila writes “I am the new P.DIDDY except I’m in my 20’s, FEMALE, and BOSS BITCH!”

“What are your thoughts on her latest project?”

NOTES: Jennifer Lopez is soooo back!

American singer and actress Jennifer Lopez graces the cover page of fashion magazine Elle US for the month of February 2010. J-Lo talks about on motherhood, heartbreak, and the future of her career, and revealed that she never considered in vitro fertilization because she’s a traditional woman.

Here are some highlights from her interview.

On why she never considered in vitro fertilization, like her character in The Back-Up Plan: “When it comes to family and relationships, I’m quite traditional. Just because of the way I was raised. And I also believe in God and I have a lot of faith in that, so I just felt like you don’t mess with things like that. And I guess deep down I really felt like either this is not going to happen for me or it is. You know what I mean? And if it is, it will. And if it’s not, it’s not going to.”

On the merit of her romantic comedies:  “I think Maid in Manhattan and Monster-in-Law are very layered movies. And that’s why they’re so successful. People don’t like shitty romantic comedies. Nothing that’s shitty is going to make $100 million.”

On hosting a dinner for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor: “She didn’t realize what she was going to symbolize. And it’s always scary to be thrown into it–that’s what I felt like when I did Selena. You’re thrown out there, and all of a sudden you’re not anonymous. You are now known. And that’s a lot to handle. It’s scary at first. Then you get used to it. And so she was in that moment of her life where it’s just like, What the hell? Everybody’s clapping for me. People are writing about me, talking about me, I’m on TV. She was just a judge in New York.”

On competing with twenty-something pop idols as a 40-year-old mom: “This is what I do—what, because I have kids and a husband now I’m not supposed to be me? I’m a more heightened me if anything. Hyper J.Lo. Everything I wanted before, I want twice as much now. And that doesn’t mean material things; it means to explore more, to think more. Being an artist doesn’t start because you’re 21, and it doesn’t end because you’re 51. You are who you are until the day you die.”

On betrayal: “This is something I haven’t been through once in my life. This is something I’ve been through a few times in my life. Where you really have your eggs in one basket and that breach happens and you know you should go but you’re still in love and you just don’t know what to do. It hits you because it’s not like you’re a cheater, and a liar, and I hate you, and you’re no good, and I’m leaving. It’s not that. It’s like, I’m tormented. Even though you’ve done this and I know it, I still don’t know what to do. I know I should go, but I don’t want to. And that’s why it’s such a fucked-up thing.”
