All On The Cover: Nicki Minaj Covers Complex Magazine

It’s official: Complex has the fall on lock. On Friday they set the Internet ablaze with the infamous and oh so into depth cover story featuring none other than, Kid Cudi, and now it’s time to lace you with the other side of their October/November 2010 issue. For their first cover ever with Nicki Minaj, they stated:

“We wanted to do something different from her typical cartoonish caricatures—hence the sexy, understated black and white shoot”.

For the interview, Complex’s Toshitaka Kondo spoke with Nicki about questions surrounding her sexual orientation, her relationship with Drake, Wayne and on why she stopped saying “no homo” but still likes “pause.”

Check out some excerpts from the interview below after the jump….

About her success:

Absolutely. A lot of people don’t know I wrote all the hooks on the album. I arranged the music, did the transitions. [Other female rappers] are told what to do, but I run my entire empire; I don’t think people would expect that.”

Talks Wayne:

“He really hasn’t had any involvement on it. But to be honest, the album doesn’t sound like Wayne. I mean, he’s my biggest influence, but it doesn’t sound like Wayne’s stuff. It sounds like Nicki.”

I always keep Nicki Minaj separate from Young Money. I allow Wayne to call the shots when we do group albums, but when I do other things and have other choices, I don’t necessarily need everyone’s go-ahead. I write my own raps, I go in the studio by myself. There are some female rappers who can’t go in the studio unless they have a ghostwriter sitting right next to them. I’m the complete opposite—I’ll go in and ghostwrite for someone.”

He’s definitely told me, “Yo, leave that bullshit alone. That’s for people who ain’t got shit else to do.” I’ve watched Wayne handle himself so well. I’ve seen people take shot after shot after shot at him and if it fazed him, I never saw it. People take shots because they’re hoping for a little bit of your energy. They need fuel.”

Talks Drake:

He told me he said something about me on a verse, but I didn’t think it would be anything like that. He let me hear it for the first time when we did Jay’s show at Madison Square Garden, the day before Wayne had to go to jail—that night he let me hear it on the headphones. But you know what else he told me he wrote for me? The Alicia Keys song “I’m Ready.” I happen to love the song. I never told anyone that, I hope he won’t get mad that I said that.”

“You have no idea how much I love them. We joke around. That’s the thing about Young Money, we will say a lot of crazy shit in the press but we will get around each other and start cracking up laughing like brothers and sisters. Drake is a playboy. He probably told mad bitches he wrote them songs for ’em.”

They always ask me to hook them up with something!”

Well, no, Drake knows better. [Laughs.] Drake tries to be the suave dude and not seem pressed, but Wayne will straight-up ask: “Nick, you got something for me?”

About her sexuality:

When I rap, it’s just an extension of how I speak, and that’s how I talk. If you don’t like it, don’t listen. I’m also not going to explain something just because I said it in a rap. Take what you want from it. [In the press] I didn’t say [I don’t like women]. I said I don’t have sex with women. I don’t have sex with men right now either. If [bisexual is] what they wanna call me, then fine.”

Talks “pause” and “no homo”:

[Laughs.] I stopped saying “no homo” because a gay person said I was perpetuating homophobia, so I accepted that. I was just so used to being around my boys and them saying, “no homo,” it’s like second nature. With “pause,” it just means no sexual connotation intended. A guy can say “pause” to a girl and vice versa.”

Breaking News: Bruno Mars Arrested For Drug Possession

Bruno Mars Arrested In Las Vegas On An Alleged Cocaine Charge…

When idolator.com interviewed Bruno Mars last month and asked the 23-year-old hitmaker if he had any crazy Vegas stories he’d like to share, his response was:

“Yeah, I don’t wanna talk about that.”

He was joking, but his arrest at 2:40 a.m. on Sunday in Sin City was no laughing matter.

Rising singer-songwriter Bruno Mars was found with a bag of cocaine in a Las Vegas casino bathroom following a nightclub show over the weekend, police said Monday.

The “Just the Way You Are” crooner was arrested early Sunday after being detained by security at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Mars, whose real name is Peter Hernandez, was found with 2.6 grams of cocaine and booked into county jail on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, police said. He faces possible felony charges.

An aide to Clark County District Attorney David Roger in Las Vegas said the case was under review and formal charges had not been filed, though Hernandez, 24, was given a court return date of Nov. 18. The office declined further comment.

Hernandez‘ publicist at Atlantic Records did not immediately return messages seeking comment from The Associated Press. A hotel spokeswoman declined comment. It was not immediately clear whether Hernandez has a lawyer.

An arrest report for Hernandez said a bathroom attendant told police Hernandez was taking a long time in a stall with a bag of a white, powdered substance. The attendant alerted a security guard, who confronted Hernandez as he left the stall. The security guard said he asked Hernandez to hand over any narcotics he had, and Hernandez pulled a bag of cocaine from his left-front jeans pocket. Hernandez was taken to a holding cell where he was questioned by an arresting officer. When asked what was going on, Hernandez replied: “Can I speak to you honestly, sir?” and said he acted foolishly and had never used drugs before, the arrest report said.

Mars performed a show Saturday night at the Hard Rock’s Wasted Space nightclub. The hotel-casino is separate from the restaurant chain with the same name.

Meanwhile, Mars has yet to acknowledge his arrest. He tweeted the following early this morning:

“Texas is dope! Im in dallas rite now looking foward to meeting some folks @ the radio stations. tune in for a special live performance”

His debut solo single, “Just The Way You Are”, is currently No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He sang the hooks on B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” and Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire” – both chart-toppers – and co-wrote and produced Cee-Lo Green‘s latest expletive-laden single. Mars’ debut album ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans’, is scheduled for release Oct. 5.

“What the hell is going on? Why is it that now all these brilliant artists want to damage their careers on some serious dumb-ass shit. Bruno Mars is so talented, and he just ruined his reputation by adding this red flag to his name. Well lets just say allegedly. ;o). I wish him well.”

Music News: Newcomer Alja Jackson Writes for Beyoncé’s New Album

https://i0.wp.com/www.thisisrnb.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/beyonce-055-768x1023.jpg

Newcomer Alja Jackson has confirmed that she has done some writing for the new Beyoncé album.

“I’m listening to the record I wrote for Beyonce” she says “Oh mane! Sh*t snappin! So Pretty Girl Bad! ‘Bout to have B on dat PGB! She on it!”

More on Alja after the jump….

Alja Jackson is a new, up and coming singer/songwriter/rapper signed to Interscope Records/Geffen Records. She even runs her own label “LEFTFIELD

Alja Jackson has been in this music game for more then 5 years now. She is known for going against the norm, using guerilla tactics & strategies with a new sense of style & flair, with her eclectic musical taste.

“When my mother would drive me around in that old Toyota Corolla, all we had was that broken car radio. It was stuck on one station and that only played pop music. I listened to that a lot and then we got home I listened to R&B and hip-hop. That’s the music I knew I wanted to do when I became an artist. I knew I wanted to be an R&B/soul star”.

What she didn’t know is that pop music would make its influence known when she started writing and shaping her sound. Alja moved to NYC to be in the heartbeat of music and to be where she thought she would find fame and fortune. She sang background vocals for iconic artists like Maxi Priest and Sean Paul. She took meetings with labels, knowing that one day she would be a star. But NYC wasn’t the dream for Alja’ Jackson and than she moved to ATL

“I knew that I had to go home because I just wasn’t feeling the vibe. I knew that ATL was the new hotspot for music, so I moved.” Alja’ was motivated but everyone wasn’t digging her sound. “It’s not that they didn’t like my music. They liked my music, but I didn’t have a sound. Every artist needs to know their own voice, their sound, and I didn’t really have one..You have to take a minute to find out who you really are. A lot of artists don’t want to struggle, but that advice opened every door. I started working with all these producers and artists and it changed everything. Then, one day I was in the studio working with the Pussycat Dolls and the next day, I was in an artist meeting with Jimmy Iovine.” Alja’ slouched in the chair, sure that this was just another “we don’t get you and your style” meeting, but “Jesse Jane,” her vibrant alter ego, knew that this was it. “Jesse Jane” was right.

Interscope Records got it and signed her the next day.

As a songwriter Alja has written songs for Diddy-Dirty Money Trey Songz“Already taken{Co-wrote it with Ester Dean}”, and Sharaya {Missy Elliott’s new artist}-“What is Love”. And she has worked with many big names in the music industry such as producers Mad Scientist, Ike Dirty, Chuck Cha-Loa, MissyElliott, Timbaland and Pharrell Williams. It’s just  been confirmed that the singer will release “I’m the Prettiest Girl”, as the first single off her upcoming debut album. It’s also been confirmed that the single will have an alternate remix that will feature Lil Wayne and Missy. The video is said to be directed by Nicole Ehrlich who also directed Kelis’s video “Acapella”.

You can listen to the single below, with lyrics that go like “I’m Hotter Than Electricity In A Wire”:

Music News: Brandy enlists Rico Love & Bangladesh for New Album

R&B singerBrandy has now been confirmed to be working with producers Rico Love and Bangladesh for her upcoming new album, “Human”.

Rico states that he’s looking to deliver “timeless music” for the singer’s anticipated project.

Bangladesh states: “I just got a call from Brandy. She wants me to do her album—hard stuff”

Rico Love’s most noted songwriting credits include Kelly Rowland’s ‘Commander’ and Beyonce’s ‘Sweet Dreams’. He also worked on Usher’s ‘There Goes My Baby’.

You can currently catch Brandy on ‘Dancing With The Stars’. Brandy will be teamed with professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy. The pair have been practicing hard. Brandy is not really known for her dancing skills, but more for her beloved voice and acting gigs, it will be interesting to see if Brandy can keep up with some of the athletes on the show.

I have high hopes for Brandy‘s new album, “Human”. Here is a new track called, “Lifeguard”. The track will most likely not be on her upcoming project, but it is a cool treat for any Brandy fans. Let see what she has in-stored for us, and if she comes out with a bang and wins the dance ball trophy.

Album Cover: Mariah Carey Unveils New Album Cover Plus More

Mariah Carey has officially unveiled her festive cover artwork for her upcoming LP ‘Merry Christmas II You‘. The artwork was shot by noted celebrity photographer David LaChapelle. The first single to be lifted from the project will be the Bryan Michael-Cox produced ‘Oh Santa’, and the LP itself will drop in stores on November 2nd, courtesy of Island Def Jam Music Group.

The project features a brand new recording of Mariah’s all-time classic ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’, as well as festive covers such as ‘The First Noel’, ‘Little Drummer Boy’, ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ and ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’ just to name the few. Producers Randy Jackson, Jermaine Dupri, James Poyser and Marc Shaiman also worked with the singer on FOUR original new songs for the album.

I don’t know why she’s remaking such a classic and one of my favorite Christmas songs of all time, ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’. This song will never me re-made the way it originally sounds. I hope that for her sake it comes out better if not the same. I can’t wait to start hearing the new tunes all over NYC, while I’m Christmas shopping.
