Music News: Nicki Minaj & Jay-Z Win Big at the BET Hip-Hop Awards

Nicki-Minaj-Jay-Z

Nicki Minaj doesn’t even have an album out yet, but she was one of the biggest winners at the 2010 BET Hip-Hop Awards, which were taped on Saturday, October 2 in Atlanta for an upcoming broadcast. The Young Money rapper took home Rookie of the Year, People’s Champ, and Made You Look (style) awards, MTV News reports.

Fitted to kill in a black dominatrix-like outfit, NYC-ish blond bob hairdo, pink nails and lipstick, Minaj grabbed her awards and “ran.” Minaj made sure to thank her “Barbies” as she accepted the award for “Favorite By Fans.”

“Last year, I was here in anticipation of the cypher,” she told the crowd, referring to the artist rap freestyles that run in between the award presentations and performances. “Now I’m here in anticipation of my debut. [‘Pink Friday’, set for release November 23.]

“I’m paving the way for girls,” she continued. “I wanna thank all the girls of hip-hop.”

Jay-Z, who was not in attendance at the awards, was also able to bag three awards. Tied Minaj’s award total, taking home trophies in the categories of Perfect Combo (Alicia Keys duet “Empire State of Mind”), CD of the Year, and Best Live Performer. Other awards went to Rick Ross (Club Banger of the Year and Track of the Year for producer Lex Luger, both for “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast)”), Salt-N-Pepa (I Am Hip-Hop), Diddy (Hustler), Swizz Beatz (Producer of the Year), and DJ Khaled (Best DJ).

Now let me remind you, the 2010 BET Hip-Hop Awards kicked off on quite the high note as Rick Ross, DJ Khaled, and Diddy opened with “B.M.F.,” one of the year’s biggest hits. To the surprise of those in the audience Ross‘ set then segued into an unexpected performance from MC Hammer, who danced frantically with a group of dancers as he performed ‘2 Legit 2 Quit.’

The 2010 BET Hip-Hop Awards welcomed a number of newcomer’s including Alabama’s own Yelawolf who performed alongside Big Boi for their hit song “You Ain’t No DJ.”

“I feel overwhelmed, you know, coming out with Big Boi from OutKast and doing our record. I never thought it would lead to here, but I’m taking it in. I’m happy and I’m honored to be a part of it,” Yelawolf explained to The BoomBox.

The Hip-Hop Awards cypher’s proved yet again to be one of the highlights of the show with a number of artists taking part in this Hip-Hop Awards staple. Kanye West gave folks a taste of G.O.O.D. Music with a cypher that featured verses from himself, Common, Big Sean, Pusha T, and Cyhi Da Prynce.Ice Cube and Rev. Run kept it all in the family with a cypher that consisted of performances from Diggy Simmons, JoJo Simmons, OMG, and Doughboy.

This year’s 2010 BET Hip-Hop Awards, hosted by Mike Epps, will air Oct. 12 at 8 P.M. on BET. Will you be tuning in? Which award categories are you most looking forward to seeing televised?

Music News: Kanye West Cancels ‘G.O.O.D. Fridays’ Due To Leaked Song

Kanye West’s “G.O.O.D. Fridays” series is officially over…well at least for now. The rapper who has been hard at work on his upcoming album released several statements via Twitter Thursday morning (Sept 30th), after a premature version of “Lost in the World” hit the internet on Sept. 29th. The leaked song which features Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, spread like wildfire despite the fact that it only has one verse of recorded vocals. Naturally, West himself is not too happy about this leak and decided it’s best to end his free music giveaway.

On Twitter, West stated that he was upset by this leak, particularly because the versions circulated are not finished and that he had been generous in supplying free music already.

“Due to blogs leaking unfinished songs from my actual album I’ve decided to pass on Good Fridays this week,” West wrote.

“It’s messed up that one hacker can mess everything up for everyone… I love to take a year to finish my songs and deliver them to you guys in their most completed form. It would have seemed like since I give free music every week even the lowest form of human being would respect that enough not to leak unfinished songs from my real album.”

Despite various reports to the contrary, the album still does not have a confirmed title or release date. Although previous reports slate the album for an early November release.

Just In: Kid Cudi Pleads Guilty!

Kid Cudi made headlines this past June after cops discovered a controlled substance on his person following an altercation with a woman at her New York City apartment. But after being charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 7th degree, he’s getting off easy.

The Cleveland native pled guilty to the misdemeanor charge this past Friday, receiving a sentence of two days of community service, according to TMZ. Additionally, Cudi was ordered to steer clear of trouble over the next six months.

The ‘Day ‘N’ Nite’ rapper, who previously became a news fixture after he punched a fan during a Vancouver concert in December 2009, is gearing up for the release of his sophomore album ‘Man on the Moon 2: The Legend of Mr. Rager’, due November 9. The sequel to his 2008 debut has already spawned the Kanye West-assisted single “Erase Me,” for which he shot the video last week.

Download It!: Kanye West ft. RZA – Jay-Z – Pusha T – Swizz Beatz & Cyhi the Prynce – “I’m So Appalled”

Kanye West has kept this whole “G.O.O.D. Friday” thing going? This week, West has again linked up with Jay-Z, Pusha T, Swizz Beatz, RZA, and Cyhi da Prince. It makes for yet another near-epic filled with some choice quotables, especially during Jay-Z and Pusha‘s verses, and slightly blunted, gloomy production. Swizz doesn’t do much other than the intro and outro sections of the track. Unfortunately, RZA, who sounds great on this beat, finds his contribution kept to a minimum, too, though Cyhi going off in his verse kind of makes up for that.

Song originally leaked on a Big Mike mixtape.

Album Cover: Kanye West Unveils New Album Artwork For His Single “Runaway”

Less than a week and a half ago, Kanye West unveiled his single “Runaway” which features Pusha T at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards through a charged performance. The single also has an accompanying 40 minute film to boot.

Today West revealed the official cover art to the anthem claimed to be for “assholes, douche-bags and jerk-offs.” The artwork features a ballerina twirling against the composition of a green wall, seen below:

This one is missing the trademark artwork since it wasn’t a G.O.O.D Friday release. “Runaway” is expected to be included on West‘s fifth album, reportedly titled ‘Dark Twisted Fantasy’, due this fall on Def Jam Records.

All On The Cover: Kanye West Covers XXL Magazine

Kanye West will appear on the cover of XXL’s October issue, hitting newstands nationwide on September 28.

The Louis Vuitton Don penned the cover story on himself—his first article ever—and also served as the creative director of his own 40-page section in the special collector’s issue.

In his candid cover story, West speaks on the reaction he received from the infamous 2009 MTV Video Music Awards debacle.

“I stress that the incident wasn’t about Taylor personally,” he explains in the story. “And it definitely wasn’t about race. Where I messed up is, at the end of the day, it’s your show, Taylor. It’s your show, MTV.”

“The relationship with the public and with your fans is like the relationship with your girlfriend,” he adds. “How could I not, at a certain point, be like, ‘I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have been at the awards show. I’m sorry.’ Not that I don’t deserve to get beat up or change who I am inside, to make sure that that doesn’t happen again.”

Mr. West said that, following his VMA outburst, he immediately dedicated himself to the studio.

“I knew I wasn’t in a great spot publicly after the incident, but I would just block it out and work as hard as possible and let my work be my saving grace,” he shared. “In a way, I had thrown a Molotov cocktail at my own career, and it gave me an opportunity, for the first time, to go away and find out who I was. Because I felt very alone.”

In addition to Kanye’s cover story, XXL’s October issue features stories on Kid Cudi, West’s G.O.O.D. Music family, Wiz Khalifa and the top 10 producers turned rappers of all time.

Be sure to pick up your copy on September 28.

All On The Cover: Kid Cudi Covers Complex Magazine

This time last year Complex Magazine’s Joe La Puma interviewed Kid Cudi for their Aug/Sept cover story that took an in depth look into Cudi’s life and music. This time around they’re back for another cover and a follow up that leads to an even better story.

Complex Magazine revealed the first cover for their October/November issue, and it features Kid Cudi making his second return to the Complex‘s front. The cover story with Cudi was also released and features an interview with Joe La PumaCudi takes the gloves off so to speak, and opens up about his new album, “Man On The Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager”. Cudi says the album is “dark, and smart explicit.” It’s no surprise since Cudi‘s music is exceptionally personal and authentic.  His debut LP, which Complex named album of the year, is also one of many fans favorite for the emotion and passion Cudi channels through his songs.  His experiences shape the music, and since the release of the first record, Cudi‘s definitely had a lot of tough ones.  He’s been to jail, had a child, been kicked off tour with Lady Gaga, and struggled with drug abuse. He addresses all those things, and has some choice words for Wale and Perez Hilton in the Complex interview.

Check out some excerpts from the interview below after the jump….

About Wale:

“Then people like Wale get mad that ‘Ye ain’t give him no beats—’Ye ain’t give you no beats because we ain’t fucking with your raps. It’s not a conspiracy theory. We don’t fuck with you musically, so we’re not going to provide music for you. The shit is a service, it’s a quality of a certain standard. Niggas are just so thirsty it’s ridiculous. I’ve been eating humble pie forever, and people still call me an asshole. These people don’t know my fucking life—now I’m going to give them something to talk about.”

About Perez Hilton:

“Even Perez Hilton said some shit about me. He might be a good person and have a good heart, but he does a lot of fuckhead shit. Who are you to talk about people? That’s not cool. That’s why the world is so fucked up, because of hate. And he’s gay? I just don’t get that. The gay people I know are about peace and love and coming together. That shit doesn’t register with me. He’s a chump and a coward, and it’s fucked up because I met dude so many times and he had nothing but love to show me. Then when that shit happened with Lady Gaga kicking me off her tour, he had to run his mouth and judge me on that shit.”

On his drug use:

“I started doing cocaine to get through interviews, ’cause people wanted to know a lot about my personal life and I wasn’t prepared for a 60 Minutes interview every time. Doing bumps I was able to get through the day, but then I would smoke weed to calm me down—it was the only way I could get through the day without people noticing I was doing it.”

“I never thought it was a problem, but I was definitely high-fiving death a couple of times. It took a lot for me to talk about shit like this on the album. I don’t feel like I need to explain myself to anyone besides the fans. My fans don’t believe shit until they hear me say it. And those are true Kid Cudi fans. I want them to know the story.”

About his daughter:

“There’s another thing people don’t know. I have a daughter, born March 26th of this year. Her name is Vada, and she’s fucking awesome. That was eating me up, and it was stressing me out that nobody knew about her. I was trying to escape from that, too. Just trying to figure it out and make everyone happy, it’s a lot for somebody my age to handle. I was manning up and dealing with it in what I thought was the right way, but it was the wrong way. I want to be around for her. I can honestly say she was the wake-up call. The reality that it’s bigger than just you now—you have a responsibility and there’s no more time for mistakes. It’s time to stop fucking around.”

About Lupe Fiasco:

“Besides the fam, and Yeezy and Don C, there’s one artist in this game who has always had my back and had nothing but love to show, and that’s Lupe Fiasco. Every time I see that man, it’s nothing but love—I saw him a little after it, and he was like “I’m worried about you, man, just checking in.” He’s somebody who I know really genuinely gives a fuck. Noreaga also checked in.”

On Kanye x Cudi:

“Can I be honest with you? I don’t think anybody is fucking with what we—me and Kanye—got. Creatively, there’s nobody. You can argue all day about who has the best album, there’s never going to be an answer. There are other artists who are hot for God knows what reason. But as far as creativity, pound for pound, track for track, video for video, hands down, there’s nobody fucking with me and ‘Ye.”
