All On The Cover: Gwen Stefani Covers Elle

From the new-wave vocal powerhouses to indie-minded breakouts to enduring legends who still rock our world, ELLE honors the women in music sounding off in 2011

On writing hits:

“I do! Why wouldn’t you want that many people listening to the songs that you wrote? There’s no way to go back after you have had it. So the intentions of even the solo records were always about trying to write those guilty-pleasure albums that just get in your head and you can’t get out. I’m not cool, I’m not into the B-sides. Prince, who is one of my idols, gave me some advice when I worked with him: “Have you ever just tried writing a hit? Like, don’t just try writing a song, try and write a hit song.” I remember him saying that and me thinking, Yeah, you’re right. Why would you write anything else?”

On her marriage to Gavin Rossdale:

“The first time we ever kissed was right around Valentine’s Day—we were in New Orleans on tour. So, yeah, I always think about that because it’s unbelievable that we’ve been able to stay together. I feel so proud of us—it’s one of my biggest achievements.”

On performing while pregnant:

“It was horrible. Certain songs would make me want to puke. You feel pretty gross when you are first pregnant. You don’t feel cute, you feel disgusting. You’re getting fat. It was hard. I mean, I’m very vain. That would be my middle name. Of course I am, you know what I mean? I love the visual.”

On whether Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Katy Perry have taken a page out of her playbook when it comes to style:

“Really? I don’t see myself in those girls. I usually put pants on. I see these girls as more going for the sex-symbol thing. I was more, in the band, like a tomboy. Of course, I think every girl is sexy, so there’s going to be a little of that. But I see a lot of younger artists going more toward the sexy thing.”

On pop music:

“When we were growing up, some of the hits were legendary ones that you hear your whole life. But certain songs, I don’t know if you’ll ever hear them again. Because that’s what that music is, like a guilty pleasure, it’s right at the moment. It’s like fashion—it’s now, then it’s gone.”

All On The Cover: Rihanna Covers GQ British Magazine

Rihanna covers the January 2011 issue of GQ British Magazine! In her interview she reveals about how she has grown as a woman, how people may perceive her new image and new album, as well her new feeling of liberation and freedom following her past relationship and break-up.

“Sometimes when you’re on the inside of a relationship like that, you can’t see it clearly for what it is. “I left – it was the best feeling. It was so freeing.”

She admitted to the struggles with past decisions, especially after swearing never to let a man touch her after seeing her mum Monica suffer domestic violence.

She confessed…

“I witnessed it happening to my mum and I said I would never let that happen to me – and then it was happening. “Now, when I look back, it bugs me out that I couldn’t see it for what it was.”

R&B singer Chris Brown, as you may all know attacked Rihanna in his car in Los Angeles on Grammy weekend. He was sentenced to five years probation, a year-long domestic violence program and 180 days of community service.

The singer also added to the subject by responding to a fan’s question about whether the media will stop asking about her past incident:

“Before that, I was just a little girl from the island, singing pop music. It was easy to think I didn’t have a problem in the world. Then all of a sudden, boom! Everybody realises that I do have problems.”

But Rihanna says that dark period is finally behind her, adding:

“It made me strong. It’s a moment in my life I wish would disappear. In my head, it’s gone.”

In an interview for the January edition of style mag GQ, chart- topper Rihanna asked for her fans not to pity her.

“I have too much pride,” she admitted. “I’d never let anyone see me cry. I don’t want you to remember me for that.”

Rihanna, whose latest album ‘Loud’ is No#2 in the UK charts, also thinks her sexy image may annoy people.

She said.. “Girls don’t like to see other girls dressed sexy. I get that. People see my ass out and my boobs out, so it can get a little irritating.”

Rihanna also took to her twitter to say she is fed up with journalists asking her questions about Chris Brown. Check the tweets below.

All On The Cover: Rihanna Covers Interview Magazine

Rihanna covers the December 2010 issue of Interview Magazine and got the honor to be interviewed by her good friend Kanye West. Kanye West wrote the cover story on Rihanna for the upcoming issue of Interview Magazine. Rihanna even talked about having a baby.

Below are a few excerpts from the interview…

Kanye: “So what inspired you to have that pink tank on your last tour? That was amazing, when you were sitting on top of the army tank.”

Rihanna: “I love to combine femininity with a kind of extreme masculine egde, and I felt like the tank is just not a typical thing that you think of when you think of a girl — or in any kind of relation to a girl. Then we made it hot pink. We just added that touch.”

Kanye: “I mean, people really need to see a photograph — the entire tank was pink. That was a great piece of commercial pop art. Was the idea of that to kind of portray an American Dream — like the fantasy of a this hot black girl sitting on a top of a pink tank?”

Rihanna:
“I never actually thought of it like that.”

Kanye:
“How does it feel to know that you could have any man in the world. Or woman. How does it feel to know that you can turn straight women gay?

Rihanna: “Is that a real question?”

Kanye: “Yeah.”

Rihanna: “Well…Thank you. I don’t know how to feel about that. I guess that’s flattering.”

On motherhood: Rihana: “I don’t really plan on the age. It could be a year from now. It could be 10 years from now. Whenever is right. I mean, I have a lot of other stuff to accomplish before I get to kids. Whenever the time is right, I’ll just know.”

Music In Ya Ear!: Rihanna ft. Drake – “What’s My Name?”

Rihanna’s steamy collaboration Drake, the Island-infused love jam “What’s My Name”, off of Rihanna‘s ‘LOUD’ album, is the number one song in the country right now. Perfect timing for the song’s video to drop, no? In the video, Rihanna and Drake get touchy-feely with one another.

Drake told the New York Times back in June about his brief relationship with Rihanna after she had asked him to write a song for her (that was never released).

“I was a pawn,” he said. “You know what she was doing to me? She was doing exactly what I’ve done to so many women throughout my life, which is show them quality time, then disappear. I was like, wow, this feels terrible.”

Looks like the two artists were able to kiss (on camera) and make up to make this sweet new video. We’ll cheers to that!

Here goes the most anticipated remaining track, to Kanye West‘s “G.O.O.D. Fridays”, called “All Of The Lights” off of his upcoming album, ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ which is just a few weeks away from being released on November 22nd. YAY!!!

The song is created with the triumphant feel of the multiple horns, the melody, and the production. The song features the likes of, John Legend, The-Dream, Ryan Leslie, Tony Williams, Charlie Wilson, La Roux’s Elly Jackson, Alicia Keys, Fergie, Kid Cudi, Rihanna, and the legendary Elton John. West does all the verses and the guest stars are scattered throughout hooks and bridges. Kanye uses a combination of rapping, singing, repetition, and memorable lines. If that doesn’t keep you entertained enough, then the bridges sure will.

From the fellas to the female’s “we’re going all the way this time” breakdown, which is sick from beginning to end. The song is DOPE from start to finish. Kanye not only did his thing personally, but made it all work with the talent involved by creating such a unique sound from one to the next. Nothin’ but thumbs up for Kanye West, he definitely knows how to create some good tunes. The single is getting tons of buzz around the net, and is quite epic, so be sure to check it out below.

Download & Listen to the after the jump….Enjoy it, it’s DOPE!!

Download It!: Rihanna ft. Eminem – “Love The Way You Lie (Part 2)”

Rihanna and Eminem had just released a haunting sequel to their summer smash hit which explored the psyche of domestic violence, “Love The Way You Lie”. The sequel is slightly slower and less violent, and was designed to be Rihanna’s side of the story. The duo kept the formula of “Love The Way You Lie” quite true to the original, with the chorus intact.

All On The Cover: Rihanna Covers Marie Claire UK

Rihanna covers the December 2010 Issue of Marie Claire UK, and if I must say so myself, she looks stunning. In her interview she talks about when she realized it was really over between Chris Brown and herself. She also talks about the new man in her life, Matt Kemp and how she can never seems to stop smiling when she’s with him.

EXCLUSIVE Marie Claire UK Interview: Rihanna on surviving the bad times and how she is happier and stronger than ever

She’s the toast of the music industry and the hottest talent around. Introducing our stunning December cover star, Rihanna. We caught up with the “Rude Boy” superstar to talk about surviving the bad times, learning to love her imperfections, and how she is happier and stronger than ever.

And as she sparkles for the cameras, debuting new fiery red hair (‘she has been dying to go red for years,’ says make-up artist Karen Darnell) you’d certainly never guess it has been such a hard year for Rihanna.

On her on her much publicised romance with Chris Brown.

‘Eventually, I remember waking up one day and I knew I was over it.’

‘One day. I remember I was in New York at the Trump Hotel and I woke up and I just knew I was over it.’

But after coming out of it the other side, the songstress admits she’s a different person now.

On almost losing herself and how she bounced back

‘I was very lost. I have to say I felt really confused,’ she says, her eyes welling up.‘I hate talking about it but it was really crazy because I felt so out of touch with myself and when that happens… It’s scary because nothing you say or do feels like it’s you.

‘You just lose touch of everything that you love and everything that you would normally do; how you would dress or how you would say something… It just feels like it’s not coming from you. It’s just this one empty vase. I felt like an empty vessel.’

On recording with Eminem and how she related it to her own personal life

With all that she’s been through, some critics have questioned her recent appearance on the Eminem single, ‘Love The Way You Lie’ and how, in their view, it glamorises domestic violence. Rihanna has no regrets.

‘He [Eminem] confronted himself on it. He basically gives insight into what goes on in the mind of a couple in a domestically violent relationship. I love that in every verse it just gets to that point where she wants to leave, she wants to leave, she leaves, she leaves, she leaves… but then the hook always comes back’

Did she relate to that on a personal level? ‘Absolutely. Absolutely! Every word in that song is true. It would take somebody who’s been on the inside to understand how magical those lyrics are.

‘Everybody loves the song but the lyrics can never hit home until you’ve seen it, witnessed it, in your home or experienced it yourself.’

On her relationship with Matt Kemp

Despite it all, the drama and the tears, Rihanna is relieved to have finally come out the other side, adding

‘I’m just… I feel like… I smile for real this time.’

I’m so happy for Rihanna. She’s a real inspiration to a lot of young girls. I’m glad she finally set the record straight as to how she felt when she was going through a rough path in the past.
