All On The Cover: T.I. Covers VIBE Magazine

T.I. covers the December 2010 issue of VIBE magazine. The magazine became the latest edition, which the rapper was interviewed before he was due back in jail for his latest run-in with the police in Vegas with his wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottell. In the interview T.I. spoke about their problems with pills, touched on family and imprisonment.

Below are a few excerpts from the interview, which will fully appear in the December issue of the publication …

I heard you mention that good deeds are quickly forgotten. Do you think that you and I been treated unfairly?

If you take in the extent to which people are generally talking about me, then – yes. But they are people who imagine something can not help. They help only those who know personally. And how can I expect to see me will be treated differently if they see me only on TV? People have always had so done: Jesus, Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali: When all is well, they are next. When something goes wrong, they are against you.

But now nothing is worse. Due to the fact that you did.

So I’ll tell you this: when you look at a guy who did not come home, he began to sell drugs at 12 years, 13 took the weapon, fell into the firefight, 15 landed in jail. And in all this chaos and hooliganism, but when I was in prison for a gun with a silencer, I have changed my life. And now you want to crucify him, for what? For three pills. Well, yes, it’s wrong and inexcusable. No problem. But if you take a large scale, it is a trifle. You can not kill a man after he went through a more serious things in life. Here it would be wrong if I rode with the weapon or shoot someone, it was then – yes. Just think about it.

How is it that you are addicted to drugs?

When I got out of prison, I had to frequently visit the dentist to repair the canals, pulling teeth. From January to February. And to relieve the pain, I subscribed to OxyContin and hydrocodone. In October 2007 I gave up and drink and smoke. Well, I took these pills and was taken only because of the pain. And then I liked it – more precisely, from them I felt good. And it’s legal. Once the pain passed, I continued to take them. I had 6.5 pieces. And I had about 80 pieces. Anyone else would have begun to drink or smoke and I saw pain. But once I realized that I was starting to take a seat them.

You talked about it with Eminem?

Of course. We were recording together and talked a lot. I asked how he knew that hooked. But if you consciously begin to self-harm, it means that something is wrong with you … with brains.”

Music In Ya Ear!: T.I. ft. Chris Brown – “Get Back Up”

T.I. and Chris Brown premiere the music video for the latest single “Get Back Up”. The track is off of T.I.‘s ‘No Mercy’ album previously known as ‘King Uncaged’, which is set to be released in stores on December 7th. As for the message of the song, well let’s just say, “sometimes getting back up from a big fall is the best thing you can do, especially for T.I. who just got sent back to jail, and Chris Brown for his major fall, with his domestic incident with Rihanna“.

Breaking News: T.I. Helps Suicidal Man From Jumping Off Building

Atlanta Police got unexpected help talking a suicidal man down from an Atlanta skyscraper on Wednesday when rapper T.I. showed up.

Officer James Polite says the hip-hop star joined the crowd outside the 22-story office building in midtown Wednesday and told officers he wanted to help. Police said the man agreed to come down in exchange for a few minutes face-to-face with T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris.

T.I. said he heard about the situation on the radio and drove to the building to help. He recorded a video message of himself on a cell phone and rescue workers took it to the man to prove the rapper was really there.

“I told him it ain’t that bad. It’ll get better, to put the time and effort into making it better,” T.I. said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. “I just reminded him know that I know. It looks bad right now, but it can turn around.”

The Atlanta native said the man seemed to be “beat up by life.”

The suicidal man, whose name wasn’t released, but according to T.I. his name is “Joshua” was taken to a hospital and no charges will be filed.

The good deed follows recent legal trouble for the rapper, who is due in court Friday for a parole hearing after being arrested on suspicion of drug offenses last month in Los Angeles. He’s on supervised release after spending a year in prison on federal weapons charges.

Wire Talk: T.I. & Tiny Heading to Jail?

Rumor has it that Rapper Clifford “T.I.” Harris is going back to Jail to serve three years & that his wife, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle will be doing a year. According to a statement released by Atlanta U.S. Attorney Sally Yates, the self proclaimed “King Of The South,” could be going back to the place he was in just a couple of months ago.

U.S. Attorney Sally Yates told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in a statement released Friday:

“We are very disappointed in Mr. Harris’ recent conduct, we will make our sentencing recommendation at the revocation hearing.”

The rapper and his wife, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle could face up to a year in California state prison, after they were found with ecstasy in West Hollywood on September 1st.

To make matters worse, not only did T.I. fail a drug test when traces of codeine were found in his system, but he was also traveling with a convicted felon named Cortez “C-Rod” Thomas.

All infractions are violations of the terms of T.I.‘s three-year probation for attempting to purchase machine guns and silencers just before the BET Hip-HopAwards in October of 2007.

This is what MediaTakeOut.com stated:

MediaTakeOut.com has some SAD NEWS to report. While nothing is set in stone a person close to Tiny told us that both SHE and her new husband TI are making preparations to GO TO JAIL . . . for an EXTENDED TIME!!!

The insider explained, “At first I though they were just making plans ‘in case’ they both [got locked up]. But no, they’re acting like they’re both going away.” The tipster continued, “Tiny’s already got a drug possession case in Georgia, and the lawyers told her that they hand out jail time in LA like it’s nothing, so she’s preparing herself.”

Who gets custody of the children if and when the couple get LOCKED UP. The insider explains, “Tiny’s mom.”

This is such a sad story. We don’t even feel sorry for TI or Tiny, it’s the kids who will be

WITHOUT parents for months and possibly years that we feel bad for.

T.I. faces possible prison time for drug arrest

Grammy-winning rapper T.I. is headed back to Atlanta and may soon be ordered to face the federal judge who signed off on an extraordinary deal that shaved years off a potential prison term.

T.I.’s arrest Wednesday night in Los Angeles for suspicion of possession of methamphetamine could trigger a motion by his probation officer. The officer could ask U.S. District Judge Charles Pannell Jr. to revoke some of the remaining probation on T.I.’s federal sentence stemming from his arrest on gun charges three years ago. T.I’s probation expires in 2013.

“T.I. is going to be back on his way to Atlanta in the next 24 hours,” Don Samuel, one of T.I.’s lawyers, said Thursday. “It’s almost certain he’ll end up appearing before the court here. But without knowing all the facts, it’s premature to speculate what the court is likely to do.”

Ed Garland, another member of T.I.’s legal team, said the rapper quickly notified the U.S. Probation Office of his arrest, as the conditions of his probation require. The probation officer has instructed T.I. to report to him when the rapper returns to Atlanta, Garland said.

During T.I.’s March 2007 sentencing hearing, the rapper told Pannell he was sorry for what had happened and vowed to become a changed man. The first-of-its-kind plea deal had required T.I., before going to prison, to perform 1,000 hours of community service telling kids and fans across the country not to emulate his old lifestyle of drugs, guns, gangs and violence.

In March, T.I. was released after serving three months in an Atlanta halfway house. This followed a seven-month term in an Arkansas prison.

Wednesday night, 29-year-old T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris Jr., and his wife, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, were arrested in West Hollywood during a traffic stop.

“Deputies smelled a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle,” the Los Angeles sheriff’s department said. “A narcotics investigation ensued” and resulted in the arrests.

T.I. and his wife were released from jail at about 4 a.m. Thursday after each posted $10,000 bail.

T.I. was arrested in October 2007 by federal undercover agents in a Midtown parking lot trying to buy machine guns, ammunition and silencers. But his legal team brokered the extraordinary plea deal with then-U.S. Attorney David Nahmias, who is now a justice on the Georgia Supreme Court. At the time, the plea deal came under sharp criticism as an example of celebrity justice.

During T.I.’s sentencing hearing, Andrew Young, the former U.N. ambassador, Atlanta mayor and civil rights leader, told Pannell he wholeheartedly endorsed the deal. Young, who officiated the recent wedding between T.I. and Cottle, said he and the rapper had forged a close relationship. Young said T.I.’s anti-drug and anti-violence message had reached legions of fans.

Pannell told T.I. he thought the “experiment” had turned out well. But he also told T.I. if he had failed during his time out on community service, “I would have simply sent you to prison.”

The question now will be whether Pannell will do that if T.I. is found to have violated his probation.

The terms of T.I.’s probation say he cannot possess or use any narcotic or controlled substance or frequent places where drugs are “illegally sold, used, distributed or administered.” He also cannot associate with anyone engaged in criminal activity, the terms of his sentence dictate.

Atlanta lawyer Tim Saviello, a former federal defender, said T.I.’s probation officer has two choices. First, he can ask T.I. to agree to modify the terms of his probation by requiring him to take drug counseling, such as attending Narcotics Anonymous classes. He may also be required to take more frequent drug tests. Pannell would have to sign off on such an arrangement.

This is what typically happens in a run-of-the-mill case in which a probationer tests positive for drugs or is found to possess a small quantity of marijuana, Saviello said. “But this is not your run-of-the-mill case,” he added.

The probation officer also has the option of filing a notice to revoke some or all of T.I.’s probation, which expires in 2013. This will require a court hearing, with Pannell deciding on whether to send the rapper to prison.

“It seems unfortunate T.I. would put himself in that situation,” Saviello said. “Certainly it’s unfortunate for him considering the nature of the deal he got.”

T.I. has a key role in the current top box office movie “Takers,” an action film about an armored truck robbery that goes bad. It was released last week and topped the box-office chart.

The multi-platinum rapper, who is known as the “King of the South,” has been working on a new album, “King Uncaged,” which may be released this year.

T.I. & Tiny Arrested for Drug Possession

T.I.

T.I. has had a run-in with the law once again. The King of the South and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle have been arrested for alleged possession of a controlled substance.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ that L.A. County Sheriff’s deputies pulled over Tip and Tiny for making an illegal U-turn while they were driving in a Maybach on Sunset Boulevard around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Sept. 1). After officers smelled marijuana in the vehicle, the couple was taken into custody in West Hollywood, Calif. They remained in custody as of press time and are scheduled to make an appearance at the Beverly Hills Municipal Court on Friday. Bail was set at $10,000.

Police stated that they discovered a controlled substance in the car, which, under California law, constitutes methamphetamines, ecstasy, and a form of codeine used in Sizzurp. Inside of T.I. and Tiny’s car were Styrofoam cups, the cup of choice for those who drink the popular Southern concoction, but cops are now claiming that they may have found X pills in the whip.

The Atlanta MC is currently on probation after pleading guilty to weapons charges. He served seven months behind bars at a Federal Correction Institution in Arkansas last year.

T.I. and Tiny were married on July 30 and the rapper-turned-actor is fresh off the success of his film Takers, which debuted at No. 1 over the weekend.

All On The Cover: T.I. Covers YRB Magazine

T.I. or Tip, whichever one is your preference is on the cover of the Fall Fashion issue of the YRB magazine. In his interview he gets into depth about how he became crowned ‘The King of the South’, the meaning of  King Uncaged”, his latest movie ‘Takers’. He also speaks on his young fashion line AKOO. On some more serious issues,  the recent year of incarceration he had to serve out during 2009.

Below are a few excerpts from the interview as well as some photos from the shoot.

On how he became crowned ‘The King of the South’….

“I actually began rapping when I was nine years old and started looking for a deal when I was 11,” the 29-year-old ATL native recollects. “By the age of 18, when it still hadn’t happened for me, I was ready to focus on being a cocaine kingpin instead.”

Talks about the King Uncaged” ….

“The title of the album signifies freedom in all senses,” he explains. “Physical freedom, mental freedom, financial freedom, artistic freedom, and also, just really taking advantage of all the opportunities around me.”

“On the album I’m Serious, I wrote the lyrics down,” he replies. “Everything from the “Urban Legend” album to “Paper Trail I didn’t write down. And on this new album, I’m doing a little bit of both.” Commenting on the difference between both methods, he says, “When I get into the booth without writing, it’s like a kinetic energy or spontaneous combustion with one continuous thought, but when I decide to sit down and write, it’s more about the technique and craftsmanship of the lyrics.”

On “Takers”….

“With Takers, my partner Jason Geter and I were fortunate to be the producers of the movie,” T.I. proudly states. “That means, we were responsible for picking the cast, choosing the director and, during the days of shooting, we made sure that what was on the script was being conveyed correctly to the screen.”

On his  fashion line AKOO

“Well, first of all I can’t draw, so I don’t really get into the sketching and designing or anything. What I do is provide direction and guidance to the designers,” he explains. “You see, I shop a lot and take pictures of things that I like, and then I go back to my designers and I ask them, ‘Do we have one of this?’ or ‘Do we have this in our collection?’ The way I do business is that I look at areas that I spend thousands and thousands of dollars myself, and then I ask, ‘How can I start a company that provides the same kind of service or product?’”

His 2009 incarceration….

“There were several moments of reflection when I was away last year,” he solemnly confides, “but you know those were all just thoughts, and now it’s time to put those thoughts in action. As far as any specific resolutions I came up with, there are quite a few. It’s all about simplifying things down now, taking it one day at a time and executing.”

“Growing up in the ghetto, all you got is your pride, your ego and your resilience because everything else around you is saying to you that you ain’t shit,” he says of how he attained his indomitable drive to succeed. “So all you really have to keep you going is what you believe about yourself in your heart and your mind. I always knew the opportunity existed to be successful in music, it was just up to me to execute and navigate through the tougher periods of my life to get to where I’m at today.”

Wedding Bells: T.I. & Tiny Officially Say I Do in Three Cities

T.I. and longtime girlfriend Tameka “Tiny” Cottle have officially tied the knot on Saturday, July 31, 2010 in Miami, according to MTV News. The nuptials are best described as a fairytale wedding! After exchanging vows at the courthouse on Friday, TI and Tiny did it up right on Miami’s Star Island Saturday. Tiny wore a Valentino gown and TI wore a white tuxedo by Prada. They arrived at the ceremony in a horse-drawn carriage that looked like Cinderella’s pumpkin. The party even included fireworks.

The guest list reportedly included names like Kandi Burruss from The Real Housewives of Atlanta, and Young Dro, Yung LA and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, Usher, Nelly, Jermaine Dupri and more partied until the wee hours of the morning at Cameo Nightclub last night.  Rihanna was also spotted in the building after performing at American Airlines Arena. Bow Wow and Angela Simmons were there too. El DeBarge sang for the happy couple. After the wedding, the new Mr. and Mrs. Harris went to Atlanta and then Las Vegas for more celebrations.

Tiny’s rep Prince Kennedy denied rumors that the couple is to say “I do” in yet another locale. “A lot of people initially heard they were doing it in Hawaii. They are not,” says Kennedy.

Though it would seem the couple has made the wedding a big to-do, Tiny said earlier this year she wanted a “private” wedding and was waiting for the right moment to make it official.

“We living, we’re happy, we’re in love. I mean, it’s no doubt in my mind that he doesn’t love every piece of me and vice versa, so we’re just doing what’s comfortable and what works for us,” Tiny told Vibe magazine. “Tiny and T.I.: Not for the world. When we get ready to make a move, we will make it. We just can’t do it for everybody.”

Music News: BET 2010 Awards

Sunday night marked the 2010 BET Awards, hosted by Queen Latifah, and an all-star roster of celebrities presented, performed, and took home top honors.

Between Prince‘s Lifetime achievement award and Queen Latifah running the show, there was plenty of royalty at last night’s 10th anniversary of the BET Awards. But in the midst of the performances of accolades, the stage was also set for a few big names to make their comebacks.

Jermaine Jackson announced the first return of the evening when he introduced the tribute to his late brother, thanking everyone for their love and support over the past year. He added, “There is one tribute performance we have yet to see…here he is.”

Chris Brown was poised behind the curtain, looking like the silhouette of Michael Jackson himself. Once he came out, there was a palpable moment of tension so strong, it could almost be felt through the TV.

https://i0.wp.com/www.bet.com/Assets/BET/Published/image/jpeg/9e385704-e5d8-df6d-b3e3-5ec2b314b1ea-beta10_Performances_bboard.jpg

Brown crotch-grabbed and moon-walked his way like a pro through the Michael Jackson songs as a supportive audience cheered him on.

But then the opening bars from “Man in the Mirror” began to play, and we all braced for the irony of the words. Brown got through about one line of the song before his voice started to quiver with tears. After a few heartfelt efforts to regain composure, Brown fell to his knees sobbing and completely gave up trying to sing as the backup track took over.

But Brown wasn’t the only one returning to the stage: Kanye West opened the show on top of a mountain – literally – as he performed his latest single, “Power.” T.I gave an upbeat performance that had the whole crowd moving, and El DeBarge was also a surprising treat as he performed a new song from his upcoming album and a medley of his R&B hits.

Queen Latifah kept the show flowing as she changed outfits about 500 times, and Alicia Keys also had a good night. She won Best Female R&B artist, Best Collaboration for her work with Jay-Z in “Empire State of Mind,” and also fit in two performances: a medley set of her own songs early on in the program, and then she joined in the Prince tribute.

But probably the best Prince performance of the night came from the one and only Patti LaBelle, who sang “Purple Rain” like we’ve never heard it before. LaBelle flicked her shoes off into the audience where Prince picked one of them up and gestured in respect to the diva.

LaBelle came back and joined Chaka Khan on stage to formally present Prince with his Lifetime Achievement Award.

Overwhelmed by the amount of praise coming from the audience, Prince asked everyone to sit down and said he was “speechless.” He started by thanking Jehovah, and then remarked on the future of music. “I do believe the future is in good hands, there is so much talent here,” he said.

Then Prince offered some words of wisdom to the young talent in the room. “I was pretty wild in my younger days and you don’t have to do what I did and you don’t have to make the mistakes I made,” he said. “Thank you for a wonderful night tonight, I’ll never forget it as long I live.”

Trey Songz took home Best Male R&B Artist and Drake won Best Male Hip Hop Artist. Nicki Minaj received the award for Best Female Hip Hop Artist and thanked the female rappers who paved the way for her.

Rihanna received the coveted Viewer’s Choice Award for “Hard,” but was not there to accept it. Also not there to accept Awards were Beyonce’ and Lady Gaga, who won Video of the Year for their collaboration in “Video Phone,” and Jay-Z was absent from the show as well.

Chris Brown had the last word, at least for the night. After his Jackson tribute, he was announced as the surprise winner of BET’s Fandemonium award, a prize determined by fan votes, beating out apparent favorites like Justin Bieber, Trey Songz and Nicki Minaj.

Stepping to the stage to receive his trophy, Brown gave a quick acceptance speech. “I let you all down before, but I won’t do it again,” he said. “I promise you.”

Here’s a breakdown of all the winners…

Winners included:

Viewers’ Choice: Rihanna (not at awards ceremony)

Best Female R&B Artist: Alicia Keys

Best Male R&B Artist: Trey Songz

Best Female Hip Hop Artist: Nicki Minaj

Prince also won a Lifetime achievement award and John  Legend won a humanitarian award.

~ “Alicia Keys’ performance had me at the edge of my seat when she climbed on top of her piano. I was so nervous that she wouldn’t fall, even Prince looked nervous. As for Chris Brown, I was so excited to see him perform, and hear how the crowd cheered him on. It was one of the best performances I saw. He really knows how to break down Michael Jackson’s moves. Welcome back Chris Brown.”
