Music In Ya Ear!: Nelly Furtado – “What You Want to Do (The Night Is Young)”

Nelly Furtado stays forever young on the energetic “What You Want to Do (The Night Is Young),” the first single from her greatest hits album ‘The Best of Nelly Furtado’, arriving November 16. The thumping electro-pop production marks her mainstream return after last year’s Spanish-language album ‘Mi Plan’.

“The night is young and so are we/ We can be anyone we wanna, baby/ ‘Cause we are free, free, free,” sings Furtado, who has been in the studio recording with The Neptunes for her next studio album.

Album Cover: N.E.R.D. Unveils New Album Cover for ‘Nothing’

N.E.R.D.’s fourth album ‘Nothing’ is finally scheduled to arrive this November, after undergoing some serious reconstructive work and a sharp change in direction. According to Pharrell Williams, the decision to scrap 27 potential songs for the album earlier this year has inspired a completely new body of work.

“We got rid of those tracks and started with nothing, so I was like, that’s what we need to do — we need to call [the album] ‘Nothing,” Pharrell tells The BoomBox. “At the end of the day, how did the world come about? They said it started with the Big Bang, but what was before the Big Bang? What comes before all great ideas? Before you’re inspired … Nothing!”

Although Pharrell has repeatedly described the album’s current line-up of songs as “lifestyle” music, the N.E.R.D. frontman doesn’t actually hold the new content in such light regard. Observations on current events, technology, and the dizzying pace of daily life, were all driving forces in the effort to create an album dedicated to “escapism,” or an alternative reality.

“We’ve had so many things going on, from the technological advancements of the iPod, and the iPad, which are genius,” Pharrell explains, beginning on a positive note. “But at the same time we also have technological failures like the oil spill and it feels a lot like the late 60s and early 70s. While I was too young to understand what we were going through, I’ve looked back at a lot of footage and newsreels from that era. And now we have issues like our dependency on fossil fuels, which has not proven to be a good thing.”

“There are issues and people want to talk about them, but we don’t want to bring people down,” he continued, emphasizing that ‘Nothing’ is intended to uplift the listener. “We want to bring people up, make people happy, we’re tired of people thinking so much, That’s why in the middle of the ‘Hot n Fun’ song, you hear me say, ‘People don’t wanna think anymore, they just wanna feel, they wanna let go,’ for just for a second man. We need some kind of escapism and that’s what the ‘Nothing’ album is about.”

Some of that escapism will appeal uniquely to the female psyche “in the same way that a Sandra Bullock film would,” Pharrell says, but by no means is it intended to be enjoyed only by the fairer sex. “This album is for black, white, gay, straight, tall, skinny, fat, whatever. As long as you have blood in your body, it’s for you. It’s just for you to listen and escape. While a lot of women hear it and they feel sexy, it’s not a sexual album. I’m not saying anything about a girl’s body necessarily. The focus is to liberate women and make them feel free and be happy about music and what music does to them.”

On the new album cover, Pharrell is wearing a combat helmet with red, white, and blue feathers stuck in the side, he shows his profile, facing away from the camera. The band’s rock-rap effort collaborated with Nelly Furtado for their single, “Hot-N-Fun” and follow-up “Party People.”

‘Nothing’ is currently set for a November 2 release.

Nelly Furtado Launches Indie Label

Pop star Nelly Furtado is not the first major-label musician to start her own label, but she is one of the few to do it with an indie. Furtado is launching Nelstar in cooperation with the Canadian independent label group Last Gang Labels.

The Toronto-based electro-dance band Fritz Helder & the Phantoms is the first act signed to Nelstar and will release its debut album July 7.

“Nelly just wasn’t that interested in doing a OneRepublic/Timbaland type of thing,” says Chris Taylor, president of Last Gang and Furtado’s longtime attorney. “She’s an independent spirit, and she wants to make sure we build the band at the right pace. It’s also very important to launch a band with indie branding behind them and be able to build them brick by brick.”

Taylor points out that Furtado has close ties to the band, noting that two members are her backup dancers.

Furtado says she never considered introducing the Nelstar imprint via her label, Interscope.

“I’m happy there, and it would be great if Fritz got signed there at some point in the future,” Furtado says. “But I also think that it’s best to start off an indie. When you are a new band and you sign to a major, you get thrown to the fire. Plus, I always secretly wanted to be an indie artist. When I was a teenager, I loved Ani DiFranco and hoped I could do something like that. A major turned out to be my destiny, but I’m enjoying reconnecting with the indie world.”

Furtado adds that Interscope is aware of the project but says, “They have enough going on without my label adding to everything.” Interscope didn’t respond to an e-mail request for comment.

The model might resemble one commonly used in hip-hop, where a rapper signs his or her protege, then builds the artist up through a series of guest spots on tracks and promotional appearances, but Taylor says there are some differences.

“Nelly’s not on the album in a meaningful way,” he says. “She’s in one of the videos, but that’s really it. She’s not like Puff Daddy in that respect.”

But that doesn’t mean Furtado has just signed the band and handed it over. “We had a meeting a few weeks ago to look at all the pictures, and Nelly was really concerned that (band member) Raquel Gil-Jimenez didn’t look foxy enough,” Taylor says. “She insisted we do reshoots, and we’re going to send the new pictures to the Maxims of the world to promote the band.”

The deal is also unique in that Fritz Helder & the Phantoms will remain signed to their own label, House of Helder, which will become an imprint of Nelstar. “We still have the label and we still control the creative aspect,” Helder says. “Nelly is acting as a mentor, Last Gang will coordinate the distribution, and we’ll still do the videos and things like that.”

Helder and Furtado describe the deal as a long-term partnership. “It’s a three- to five-year deal, with one or two albums,” she says. “I’m doing this for a band I love, and I don’t want it to be too restrictive.”

Furtado adds that she’s looking at signing a few other bands. “I’m busy enough right now, and I don’t want this to get to a point where it’s something I’m not passionate about,” she says. “I want this to be something that really grows organically.”

“Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve heard anything about Nelly Furtado and I must say that this news of her launching her own label is good news. Good for her. I wish her all the best.”
